Had my lunch interrupted by a client; one of his school's student developed a major nose-bleed, and bled all over the restroom. My client needed to clean up the blood fast (you don't want students not able to use the facilities), so he asked me to run through for him our blood & bodily fluid procedures. I gave him a pretty thorough run-through over the phone, and then e-mailed him a copy of that part of our procedures manual when I got back to the office. And here it is, for your edification:
Removal of Blood Spills & Potentially Infectious Materials
Minor or small spots (carpet or hard surface floors) – up to 2” in diameter:
Wear protective equipment to include waterproof gloves (mandatory), goggles, etc.
Post “WET FLOOR” signs.
Use a spray bottle to apply Virex256™ or Alpha HP™ over blood or potentially infectious material in accordance with label directions.
Allow to dwell, keeping wet, for at least 10 minutes.
Clean-up contaminated material with paper towels (You’re wearing gloves; RIGHT?).
Check with ultra-violet light for any material left.
Apply Virex256™ to disinfect spot, keep wet for at least 10 minutes, and allow to air dry.
Dispose of gloves, towels, etc. by placing in a separate trash bag and it tying off before placing it in the regular trash receptacle. Wash hands thoroughly.
DO NOT REMOVE “WET FLOOR” SIGNS UNTIL FLOOR IS COMPLETELY DRY.
Major Spills – Hard Surfaces (over 2”, less than 24” in diameter)
Wear protective equipment to include waterproof gloves (mandatory), goggles, gowns, etc.
Post “Wet Floor” signs per OSHA
Mix 1 oz of Virex256™ per gallon of water.
Place clean mop in bucket of Virex256™ or Alpha HP™ – DO NOT WRING or tamp!
Allow mop to drain around spill (do not allow mop to touch spill). It is important to completely cover the spill with the Virex disinfectant solution.
Return mop to solution – wring out – pick up diluted spills. Return mop to solution often to re-wet spill, then wring out & pick up.
Dispose of used/soiled solution by emptying into sanitary sewer (sink or toilet).
Check with ultra-violet light for any material left.
Fully rinse bucket with clear water, then mist with Virex256™, keep wet for at least 10 minutes, and allow to air dry.
Apply Virex256™ to clean decontaminated area and allow to air dry.
Dispose any contaminated cleaning items, including gloves, mop head, gown, etc. by placing in a separate trash bag and it tying off before placing it in the regular trash receptacle. Wash hands thoroughly.
DO NOT REMOVE “WET FLOOR” SIGNS UNTIL FLOOR IS COMPLETELY DRY.
Major spills – carpeted areas
Wear protective equipment to include gloves (mandatory), goggles, gowns, etc.
Post “Wet Floor” signs
Place mop in bucket of Virex256™ or Alpha HP™ – lift mop from solution (do not wring or tamp).
Allow mop to dribble/drain around spill; completely covering spill area with solution.
Pick up decontaminated solution with wet-dry vacuum or extraction equipment.
Check with ultra-violet light for any material left.
Apply Virex256™ to decontaminated spot HOW MUCH and allow to dwell for at least 10 minutes. Pick up flooded area with wet-dry vacuum or extraction equipment. It is important to remove as much moisture as possible.
